Client Spotlight: Through the Garden

Through the Garden LogoLusk Law, LLC, regularly shines the spotlight on one of our clients. For this month’s spotlight, we are recognizing Through the Garden, a client that is one of the premiere landscaping firms in our area. Through the Garden is a boutique landscaping company that creates unique and artistic landscapes for their clients throughout Maryland, northern Virginia, and Washington D.C. They are small enough to develop close relationships with their customers and large enough to handle any size project. Their ideal client is a discerning customer who is looking for a creative design with a personal touch and understands that creativity and quality take more time and a larger budget. Through the Garden’s award-winning projects have been showcased in magazines and featured in home and garden television shows. Examples of their projects include comprehensive master garden plans, rooftop gardens, theme gardens, aquatic gardens, pool scaping, foundation plantings, landscape lighting, stone walls, patios, and walkways.
Founded in 1991, Through the Garden is the result of the partnership between Mike Yeomans and Henk Sterenberg.
Yeomans earned his degree in landscape architecture from Texas Tech University and started his career working for a civil engineering firm doing landscape planning and design. Eventually Yeoman’s creativity led him to focus on landscape design and installation where he could not just design landscapes, but also oversee their installation. “In my mind, there’s nothing more satisfying than actually overseeing my designs being implemented,” said Yeomans. “This is why I started my own company in 1988 and eventually founded Through the Garden.” Blue Jars Through the GarenYeomans has won many awards for his design work and has been featured in HGTV’s Curb Appeal, Frederick Magazine, and Washington Home & Garden. Sterenberg, who is originally from the Netherlands, received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering before coming to the U.S. in 1983. Prior to joining Through the Garden in 2004 as partner and general manager, Sterenberg worked as a senior project manager/civil engineer with a large consulting engineering firm. Some of the large commercial projects he worked on include the IRS headquarters, the NIH campus, Andrews Airforce Base, and Fort Meade military facilities. blue_vaseSterenberg spends most of his time focusing on Through the Garden’s day-to-day business operations but lends his engineering expertise to projects as necessary to address grading, drainage, and retaining wall issues. “Our unique designs, high-quality construction standards, and across-the-board professionalism are what set Through the Garden apart from the competition,” according to Sterenberg. “We are committed to seeing each project through from conception to realization. And we take into consideration the existing landscape and architecture during the design phase of our projects to create a harmonious relationship between the old and the new.” Yeomans and Sterenberg, who have been business partners for 14 years, came to Lusk Law, LLC, to create a comprehensive partnership agreement that would define the various details of their partnership and help prepare them for any possible legal issues that might arise from their business relationship.
According to Yeomans and Sterenberg, they appreciate the legal expertise Lusk Law provided, as well as how Lusk Law moved the process along quickly and professionally.
