Maryland readers of this blog may be interested to learn about a recent decision to lower the child support payments owed by the father of singer and celebrity Beyonc Knowles. Matthew Knowles reportedly fathered a son. He was married to another woman at the time. He was originally ordered to pay $12,000 monthly for child support.

Knowles asked for the reduced payment amount because he said his income has been lessened dramatically. He said the change came after Beyonc let him know his services as her manager were no longer needed. He does not mention the famous singer by name, but the implication is clear from a reading of the court documents.

The support payments were reduced by more than $120,000 a year and will now total $2,500. Knowles was also ordered to pay $15,000 to cover legal fees incurred by the boy’s mother during this child support battle. The decision is retroactive and will be effective dating from last February.

Knowles and the mother of Beyonc were divorced about five years ago. The two were married for almost three decades. The divorce filing happened shortly after he was named in the paternity case that determined he fathered the son for whom he is now paying support.

Although most parents litigating child support issues in Maryland will not make the newspaper when they do so, some of the same issues brought up by this case could still apply to their situations. Luckily, there are specific guidelines that govern the amount and distribution of child support. Having a good understanding of those guidelines and any applicable laws and procedures can help both parties as they seek to achieve a satisfactory resolution.
