A Cut Above, Inc.

At Lusk Law, LLC, we know that our success depends on our ability to provide the best representation for our clients, both with the day-to-day legal issues and with litigation, when necessary. We value our relationships with our clients, and to show our appreciation we developed Client Spotlight e-blasts. The Client Spotlight is a monthly feature about our long-standing clients. For this month’s entry, the Spotlight is on A Cut Above, Inc., a Maryland custom cabinet and design firm.

A Cut AboveA Cut Above teamed with Lusk Law, LLC to address its varied legal needs, first approaching the firm regarding how best to create an employee incentive plan that would award employees with equity in the company. A Cut Above was originally organized as a limited liability company. Employees of a limited liability company are restricted from becoming owners of the company, so we merged the LLC into a newly created corporation that could distribute ownership to its deserving employees. Lusk Law, LLC continues to serve the spectrum of the needs of A Cut Above, including strategic business planning, drafting documents, and preparing tax returns. In the words of Chip Yawney, the owner of A Cut Above, “we include Lusk Law, LLC among our most important partners and we place our confidence in their advice.”

Chip YawneyChip, following a successful career in sales and management positions at IBM, Status Computer, and Lucent Technologies, fulfilled his dream of creating a company when he founded A Cut Above in 2005.  At A Cut Above, Chip brings together his passion for custom woodworking, his uncompromising standards of quality, and his old-fashioned values of quality, honesty, and integrity. A Cut Above was formed to produce custom built-in libraries, media cabinetry, home offices and custom wood furnishings of the best quality while delivering top-quality service to his customers.  “Pleasing our clients and exceeding their expectations is what is important to us,” says Chip.

Kitchen Cabinets by Built in by A Cut AboveAs many Lusk Law, LLC clients have done, Chip started his business from scratch (“no clients, no shop, and no portfolio”) and has grown the business to the point that today they have more than 200 clients and have installed over 300 built-ins. These clients enjoy the work of A Cut Above every day in their home and will remember A Cut Above forever. The best compliment any business can receive is repeat business—and many clients have come back to A Cut Above as many as four times for additional projects.  Chip combines his more than 40 years of woodworking experience with his passion for customer service to satisfy the functional and aesthetic needs of his clients.

Built in by A Cut AboveA Cut Above is a family affair. Chip’s wife, Lorri, when not teaching piano or accompanying the church choir, maintains the business plans and works part time in the office taking care of administration. Their musician son, Brian, before pursuing his career as a stage technician, had been a valuable summer-time and vacation-time contributor with the millwork, finishing, and installations. While providing volunteer legal services to the Atholton High School Drama Boosters, Lusk Law, LLC first met Chip and Lorri when they volunteered to become co-treasurers of the Boosters.

Lusk Law is pleased to have A Cut Above and Chip as clients!
